Start with the morning you want. Coffee within walking distance of a village square, or breakfast alone with a country view? The answer matters more than a long list of amenities. Choose the base around the way you intend to spend your time, then compare the details carefully.
The village stay
A room or house in a historic centre can make an evening stroll feel effortless. Ask how close a car can come, where luggage must be carried and whether steps are unavoidable. A romantic address is not automatically suitable for every mobility need.
The country house
A rural house gives a different kind of space, but often makes you more dependent on a car. Check the precise location, access road, nearby services and whether there are neighbouring properties. Do not infer seclusion, accessibility or a heated pool from a photograph.
The questions that change a booking
For cooler months, confirm heating and any facilities that are seasonal. For a short stay, check minimum nights, arrival times, cancellation conditions and the total cost. Ask whether a tasting, dinner or transfer can actually be arranged on your dates.
